RESPIRATORY STIMULANTS
DEFINITION
It is defined as "the drug or chemical agent which is used to stimulate the respiratory system or restore the normal respiration when our lungs are unable to eliminate sufficient amount of carbon dioxide and unable to take sufficient amount of oxygen molecule are collectively known as respiratory stimulant.
- It include the class of those drug which is used to stimulate the CNS i.e Central nervous system of the body,hence it is known as CNS stimulator
- It Also stimulate the chemo receptor and vasomotor centre of the body
- As the drug act as a irritating agent therefore it irritate the epithelial layer of the air passage such as bronchi, trachea and lungs which leads to respiratory stimulation
Example of respiratory stimulants:-
- Ammonium carbonate[(NH4)2CO3]
- Carbon dioxide(CO2) &
- oxygen(O2 ).
Molecular formula: [(NH4)2CO3]
Molecular weight: 96.0 u
Synonyms:
- Ammonium sequin carbonate.
- Harts horne &
- Preston salt.
I.P. limit: Ammonium carbonate contains not less than 30% of NH3.
Preparation of Ammonium carbonate:
It is prepared by sublimating a mixture of Ammonium Sulphate or chloride with calcium carbonate.
- (NH4)2SO4 +CaCO3-----------> (NH4)2CO3 + CaSO4
- 2NH4Cl + CaCO3-----------------> (NH4)2CO3 + CaCl2
Physical properties of Ammonium carbonate:
- It occur as translucent hard, crystalline masses.
- It has strong ammonical order.
- It has white appearance.t
- It has pungent and ammonical taste.
- On exposure to air it partly dissociate and loose Ammonia and carbon dioxide.
- (NH4)2CO3---------> 2NH4 + CO2( on exposure to moisture )
- It is freely soluble in water but partially soluble in alcohol.
Storage condition of Ammonium carbonate:
As the above discussed salt decompose on exposure to air. So
It should be stored in a well close air tight container,
protecting from light
Uses of Ammonium carbonate:
- It is used as a respiratory stimulant.
- It acts as expectorant and Pharmaceutical aid.
- It is used in preparation of aromatic spirit of ammonia.
